A top-producing financial advisor at Stifel Nicolaus in Radford, VA, senior Vice President/Investments George Abie Williams advises clients on mutual funds, stocks, and bonds. George Abie Williams has also served as president of the Radford University Athletic Foundation Board.

Located in VA’s Shenandoah Valley, Radford University was chartered as a school for women in 1910. Its tradition of involving women in education continues today with female participation in a university-sponsored research trip to the Arctic Ocean.

In March 2020, Radford students and their teacher will journey to Utqiagvik (Barrow), Alaska, which lies further north than any other American city. They plan to study characteristics of the sea ice, such as resistance to electricity, the presence of microplastics and bacteria, and the effects of tides, wind, and friction.

Katelyn Collett is scheduled to investigate the placement of microorganisms in the ice. Taking core samples from different locations related to salt content and sun angle, Ms. Collett will stain the bacteria for later testing.

The students intend to involve the Eskimo community by informing them of their findings, then present the results at the fall meeting of the American Geophysical Union, which will attract some 23,000 participants.
